Customer Settings

You can edit the customer settings by going to Configuration > Settings > Customer Settings

Explanation

'Usernames' EnabledCheck the box to use user names for login/registration instead of e-mails. Warning: It is recommended that you change this setting in the production environment.
Allow Customers To Change Their UsernamesA value indicating whether customers are allowed to change their user names.
Allow Customers To Check The Availability Of UsernamesA value indicating whether customers are allowed to check the availability of user names (when registering or amending ‘My Account’).
Registration MethodDetermines the customer's registration method. In the Standard mode, visitors can register with no need to approval. In the E-mail Validation mode, the user must respond to a validation e-mail in order to active the account. In the Admin Approval mode, registration is subject to the administrator's approval. In the Disabled mode, registration is disabled.
Allow Customers To Upload AvatarsA value indicating whether customers are allowed to upload avatars.
Default Avatar EnabledA value indicating whether to display a default user avatar.
Show Customers' LocationA value indicating whether the customer’s location is shown.
Show Customers' Join DateA value indicating whether to show the customer's registration date.
Allow Viewing Of Customer ProfilesA value indicating whether the viewing of customer profiles is allowed. 
Notify About New Customer RegistrationNotifies the store owner when a new customer is registered.
Hide 'Downloadable Products' TabCheck the box to hide the ‘Downloadable Products’ tab on the page ‘My Account’.
Hide 'Back In Stock Subscriptions' TabCheck the box to hide the ‘Back in Stock Subscriptions’ tab on the page 'My Account’.
Customer Name FormatRefers to the name format of the customer.
Maximum Length Of The Customer NameDetermines the maximum length of the displayed customer name.
Hide Newsletter BoxCheck the box if you want to hide the newsletter subscription box.
Store Last Visited PageWhen enabled, the most recently visited page will be stored. Disable this option to improve performance.
Default Password FormatChoose default password format. Please keep in mind that this setting will be applied only to newly registered customers.

Explanation

'Company' EnabledSpecifies whether or not the company is enabled.
'Company' RequiredSpecifies whether or not the company is required.
'Street Address' EnabledSpecifies whether or not the street address is enabled.
'Street Address' RequiredSpecifies whether or not the street address is required.
'Zip / Postal Code' EnabledSpecifies whether or not the zip/portal code is enabled.
'Zip / Postal Code' RequiredSpecifies whether or not the zip/portal code is required.

'City' Enabled

Specifies whether or not the city is enabled.

'City' Required

Specifies whether or not the city is required.
'Country' EnabledSpecifies whether or not the country is enabled.
'State/Province' EnabledSpecifies whether or not the state or province is enabled.
'Phone Number' EnabledSpecifies whether or not the phone number is enabled.
'Phone Number' RequiredSpecifies whether or not the phone number is required.
'Fax Number' EnabledSpecifies whether or not the fax number is enabled.

Date and Time Settings

Explanation

Allow Customers To Select Time ZoneCheck the box to allow customers to select the time zone. If checked, the time zone can be selected in the public store. If not, the default time zone will be used.
Default Store Time ZoneSpecifies the default store time zone.

External Authentication Settings

Explanation

Auto Register EnabledCheck the box to enable auto registration when using external authentication. With this option enabled, a new customer account will be created in your shop if a customer uses External Authentication Methods.
